Dornfeld announces rare visit to greater Sacramento region

Artist’s rendition of conference to be attended by Joanna Dornfeld

Joanna Dornfeld, daughter of noted Bureau of Labor and Statistics maven Mary Marcotte has announced her intention to visit Sacramento in early August. Dornfeld will be attending a conference put on by the National Council of State Legislatures and California State University Sacramento from August 2 through August 9, 2008.

Dornfeld will arrive in Sacramento on August 1, and sources have confirmed that she “would love to see as many of the Marcottes as possible.” Family insiders have hinted that a barbecue dinner at John and Patti Marcotte’s  South Sacramento home may be possible, but as of yet there has been no official statement from Dornfeld or her representatives.

Dornfeld’s trip would be the most recent in a string of vists to Sacramento by Marcotte relatives, including renown global traveler Nancy Heidenreich, family historian Mary Marcotte and repeated visits from Marcotte patriarch and hospitality industries magnate Ulysses “Leon” Marcotte.

Our Trip to Monterey

Patti, Anya Stella and I went to Monterey this past weekend. It wasn’t our original plan, but since the entire northern part of the state was on fire, we decided to go south.

We saw the aquarium, an IMAX movie and WALL-E, all in one action-packed weekend.

Here’s some photos from the trip.

It’s been a long time since I stood on a rug that used to be a Wonder Bread wrapper. Perhaps too long.

Fun things to do, Reunion

Cousins’ Reunion

Hi everyone!

I’m trying to determine if there is interest in a cousins’ reunion! I have long wanted to get us all together, and the importance of this potential event takes on new significance since the passing of Mike F.

I have attached two documents - one is a survey to gauge interest and a second is a map of where we are all located currently.

I would be thrilled to hear back from all of you, even if it is just to say that ‘No, I’ll pass’. Due to the complexity of the travel and arrangements we are looking probably 2009.

Wouldn’t it be great to reconnect? And it wouldn’t be the same without you and your family.

Please note: I am only sending this to the immediate cousins and Aunt Sue and Uncle Leon. If you have grown children and would like me to contact them directly, please send me their contact info on your survey (name, address, email).

Also - I am missing an email for Pat Farrell !! and my email for John Marcotte, Dawn Heidebrink and Gary Nelson keep bouncing back. Does anyone have more up to date info? We can’t leave anyone out!!

Also, Renee can you coordinate info gathering for your dad? I’m assuming he does not have an email….like my mom.

Please, take a moment to fill out the survey and send it back to me. I would really appreciate it.
Thanks!

Our Day at the Zoo

Patti, Anya, Stella and I went to the Sacramento Zoo on Saturday. It’s one of Anya’s favorite places. She loves the giraffes, lemurs, zebras and kookaburra — although she’s a little afraid of the chimps. (They have a tendency to shriek loudly.)

We ate lunch by the flamingos, and considered going on the little train, but decided the exercise was good for us. I took some photos, and here are the first few that I uploaded. More to follow.

Bishop’s Pumpkin Farm

John and I took Anya and Stella to the pumpkin farm today. This place was great! They had pony rides, forts to play in, hay rides, lots of food and a petting zoo. It’s about 45 minutes north of Sacramento and much more convenient than Apple Hill because we could do everything in one place without getting in and out of the car.

Anya got to take her first pony ride and feed goats for the first time as well. A fun time was had by all!

How tall is Anya? Saddle up! Anya’s ready to ride.

Giddy-up! In the fort. Hungry goats.

My Day at Jury Duty

JurySo I got called for jury duty last week. Like most Americans, I didn’t want to go. But I realize that it is a necessary part of our judicial system. The day was quite long and full of small, strange moments. I had to be there at 8 a.m.

Patti dropped me off down at the courthouse, and I turned in my paperwork, got my questionnaire and sat down. There was a sign above the counter where you received your badge. It said, “If you park in the two-story garage before 8:00 a.m., you will be charged.”

It occurred to me that the sign had several significant problems. The first being that if you were already at the check in counter, then it was too late to make sure your car was in the right lot. But even if I was clairvoyant, and knew that the lot was available to me after 8 a.m., I was supposed to check in upstairs before 8 a.m. So I could really only use the lot effectively if I could read the sign in the jurors’ lounge from the street, and I arrived after 8 a.m., which they repeatedly warned us was not acceptable. Great sign. Continue Reading »
