Patti, Stella and Anya’s smashing day
I got a call at work yesterday. It was Patti. She was crying and Stella was screaming in the background. As she was turning into our driveway, a car tried to pass her on the right and slammed into the Pilot. The point of impact was Stella’s door. No one ended up being hurt, but it scared everyone involved. I went home to help. Continue Reading »
Nancy’s last words (before she goes home)
The final text message from Nancy in the hospital.
Finally got a shower and I feel so much better. Waiting 4 Steve to come get me. No swimming but I can still dangle my feet in the pool and wade in the beautiful water. Still can’t believe how much damage that surf board inflicted. Time 4 massage and pedi. Love you guys. Thanks 4 everything.
Then an e-mail this morning:
Hello,
I am doing quite well today. My IV was removed and I was able to finally wash the sand and blood out of my hair. I feel much better. I am on the computer at the nurses station, awaiting the arrival of Steve and plan to check out of the hospital shortly.
The doctor came into see me early this morning and gave me instructions for after my release. I have really had to put my trust in God’s hands while here. I knew the moment I put my hands to my cheek in the water that my bones were broken and that I would need surgery. The island of Phuket with all of it’s beauty is very third world and poor, so my biggest concern was infection and who would patch me up, but have to tell you after moving me to Bangkok-Phuket hospital I have had the most wonderful plastic surgeon and over all care possible. I of course won’t know if there will be any permanant damage until it all heals.
Swelling and bruising should disappear in 1-2 weeks. The blood clot in my eye in should disappear in about 1 month. Numbness and tingling sensation could take up to 3-4 months to completely go away. Scarring should also be minamal and will heal within the 6 month range. I do feel confidant that I will be back to normal in time.
I’m hoping my camera has been charged and that I will be taking photos of Phuket by this afternoon.
Thank you for all of your prayers and good wishes.
Love to all … Nancy

Beth, John, Katie, Photo of the Day
Hello, Ladies!
Was it the pleated, acid-washed jeans? The Flowbee-style haircut? Or perhaps that faint whiff of Old Spice mixed with Clearasil?
No one knows for sure, but somehow I was really able to reel in the ladies with large prints on their dresses and even larger hair in the ’80s. Case in point below:

Hello, Ladies!

Nancy is looking good
Hey, talked w/Steve briefly about 15 min. ago on his Singapore cellular.(I got myself some Nobel minutes). It was 5a.m. in Thailand, and I woke him up. He and the girls are planning on going up to the hospital in a couple of hours. Steve said he would text me and then I can call them on their Singapore cellular. I am sure that someone other than I will be hearing from Nancy as well whenever she wakes up, but I will send out another email as soon as I talk to her. (plan on around 6pm your time)
Steve thinks they did not put a plate in, only two screws. They placed them in her cheekbone through the roof of her mouth. She has a small incision line just below her eye and inside her mouth, stiches come out saturday. He says she looks good, other than bruising and swelling. (whatever that means).
Please pass word around, as I don’t have everyone’s email address at my new email.

Messages from Nancy

Nancy in Singapore
So I got a few text messages from Nancy on my cell phone this morning. I’d like to think I am the only one, but I suspect she sent them to others as well. But since I know not everyone has cell phones and may not have gotten the messages, I’m going to reprint them here:
The doctor was just here he showed me my after surgery xrays. He did such a nice job. There are tiny plates and srews in three places. I can shower tomorrow.
Yeah! I am also checking out sometime tomorrow. Hopefully, I can try and slavage the rest of our holiday on this beautiful island. Thanks 4 all or your prayers and wishes.

Joe, Things only crazy people do
Joe doing things his mother wouldn’t approve of…
Those of you not living in Sacramento may be unaware of this, but Joe Maier has taken up rock-climbing as a hobby for the past several years. He even joined a rock-climbing gym, which was expensive until Joe turned 15 and they hired him to teach classes. In other words, he’s pretty good.
Here’s a video that one of Joe’s friends took last summer that shows the practical application of the craft: What if you lived in a second story apartment and forgot your keys?

Anya, Stella, John & Patti at the Picture People
Because Leon has been being such a pain in the butt about getting photos of my family, we have tried to oblige him. But giving him just any old photo of Stella or Anya has not worked out. He needs it to be vertical, and he needs to complain that Stella’s head is chopped off in this photo:

| From Stella Grace |
This evidently ruins the entire picture. A fact that had somehow escaped the notice of everyone else who saw it.
So we went to Picture People in Arden Fair Mall and spent a bunch of money to get “professional” portraits taken by people who probably also turned in applications at Orange Julius and Hot Dog on a Stick.
We had a pretty good time and hammed it up a little. Our photographer was either a current or former “Miss Sacramento,” which was nice, I guess. Anya found friends to run around shrieking with while we waited. And, according to Patti, I told inappropriate jokes to the other families in the lobby.
So here are the results of the shoot, complete with watermark to prevent me from printing my own copies.
We got an 8″ x 10″ vertical for Leon of the whole family, and a few more for ourselves. If anybody else wants any of these, let me know and we’ll try to get some more prints made.
